This whole weight loss thing is killing me. I mean, I have the motivation (I do not want to be known as "The Fat American" all next summer. Helloooo.) but willpower? Eh. Not so much.
I think part of my problem is that, well, I am an idiot. I mean, I must be, right? I did Atkins Induction and didn't lose a darn thing. I talked to Sugar Free Sheila on AIM (anyone can do it... I am not special) and this is how the conversation went:
krista (11:51:20 AM): Hi Shelia! My name is Krista. Do you have a second to answer a few questions about Induction?Yes, that is the whole conversation, word for word. I copy/pasted it because while I may not be special, I am a dork. And sorry about the TIM stuff about peeing on a ketostix, but you know, I wanted to keep it real and post the real conversation.
SugarFreeSheila (11:52:03 AM): So long as you have already read Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, as well as through my Atkins FAQ, I'm all yours!
krista (11:52:40 AM): Yup! I am re-reading your FAQ now, and read the book yesterday. (I plan to reread the book again today.)
SugarFreeSheila (11:53:26 AM): Excellent! The book is the all-important first step.
krista (11:54:04 AM): I am so very confused! I started induction yesterday and thought I was doing ok, but then I posted what I ate to the Atkins Diet BB and the replies I have had say that I ate too many veggies.
SugarFreeSheila (11:54:59 AM): A hot fudge sundae is one thing; non-starchy veggies are quite another. Are you steadily losing?
krista (11:55:09 AM): Well, According to fitday my net carb count for yesterday was 9... so I don't know if that is ok.
krista (11:55:35 AM): Well, I just started yesterday but this morning I used a ketostix and it was pink.
SugarFreeSheila (11:56:17 AM): If your total carb count is roughly 20 grams, and your veggies are cited in the finite list of allowable foods, and your cheeses do not exceed the 3-4 ounces per day cited in the book, you are SET.
krista (11:56:54 AM): Good! I was wondering what the heck I was supposed to eat if I couldn't have a salad with my meals.
krista (11:56:58 AM): This is what I ate:
SugarFreeSheila (11:57:10 AM): It's all in the book.
krista (11:57:18 AM): B: 3 eggs with 1/3 cup mushrooms and 1 oz. cheese
SugarFreeSheila (11:57:26 AM): Beautiful ...
krista (11:58:13 AM): L: hamburger, salad w/ 2 cups romaine, 1/2 c cukes and 1/2 c celery, 2 T. Marie's 0 carb blue cheese dressing
SugarFreeSheila (11:58:37 AM): Oh, that is a great lunch! Hamburger & salad ...
krista (11:58:59 AM): D: 2 Italian sausage (no fillers or sugars, 0 carbs), salad w/ 2 cups romaine, 1/4 c each celery and cukes and the blue cheese dressing
krista (11:59:49 AM): I drank 96 oz. of water, and walked on the treadmill for 33 minutes (3.0 MPH at 2.5% incline, I think)
SugarFreeSheila (11:59:58 AM): With this menu & exercise regime, you will put me out of business.
krista (12:00:58 PM): Thank you! I am so glad to know that I am doing it right.
krista (12:01:19 PM): Thanks for all your help!
SugarFreeSheila (12:01:34 PM): I understand; you have to find what works best for you, and what is the most livable way for you to get and keep fit. No problem; I've been at this SFS.com thing for 6½ years, and am here to help!
krista (12:02:16 PM): That is good to know, because I am sure I will have many more questions as I go along.
krista (12:02:19 PM): Thanks again!
So anyway, as you can see, I should have been dropping weight. Nope. Didn't happen. I posted on an Atkins BB and was told that I was eating too many vegetables (even though my daily carb count was below the 20 allowed), that I wasn't eating enough fat (a first for me, I promise you) and not enough carbs. So, I was eating too many vegetables - my only allowed source of carbs besides the cheese and cream that are allowed in limited amounts - but wasn't eating enough carbs. How does that even make sense??
So here I am,. back at trying to figure out this whole low carb thing again. There is a woman on the Stella Style board who said she counted carbs to 20 a day and lost 110 lbs. in 11/12 months. She emphasized that she stayed healthy - which is important to me. (Says the fatty...)
So if anyone out there has any suggestions, I am all ears.
And you should totally feel sorry for me. Thank you.

Krista,
You know Andy and I did Atkins and were very successful with it. I looked at your menu and again at my New Diet Revolution book and noticed that you are eating too many veggies for induction. If you have the book, you will notice that you can have 2 cups salad veggies AND one cup from the other veggie list, OR 3 cups salad veggies... PER DAY. It looks to me like you had 3 cups veggies per meal. Later this will be fine, but to get into ketosis, this won't work.
I typically had my salad veggies (2 cups) at lunch (and added a hard boiled egg and some bacon bits and cheese to it), and a steamed broccoli or other veggie with my dinner.
I also did not turn ketosis stix until day 3, and did not see a weight loss until day 4.
Email me privately if you have questions. I have a fitday.com log of all the foods we ate when we were doing it.
Andy and I are starting with an induction again this weekend, since we both have gained back about 10lbs in the past year or so since we quit being conscious of it.
Marie
